What is Integrative Medicine?

The term Integrative Medicine refers to the blending of conventional and natural/complementary medicines along with lifestyle interventions and a holistic approach – taking into account the physical, psychological, social and spiritual wellbeing of the person – with the aim of using the most appropriate, safe and evidence-based modalities available. (AIMA joint working party/RACGP : ‘Best Practice’ document)

What is Functional Medicine?

The human body is a complex integrated being. It is made up of anatomical organs, and functioning on a cellular level governed by biochemical and physiological systems. Due to each persons' genetic make up, and different lifestyles (different diets, environmental exposures, emotional stressors), the functions of these systems vary from person to person. When these many interconnected functions are balanced, a person experiences health. When there is imbalance, 'disease' is experienced.

Functional Medicine aims to address the underlying imbalance of disease. It does this by detection (with functional diagnostic testing) and correction (with functional nutrition therapy). It is a science based approach that utilises functional testing to assess a person's individual biochemical and physiological state. Functional medicine aims to not only treat symptoms, but to maximise bodily function in a way that acts as a prevention for future disease, and can also increase the body's resilience to future environmental stressors.

Functional Medicine does not promise a 'magic cure'. It is simply a different way of looking at the human body.
